What is Turkish coffee reading?
Turkish coffee reading, known as kahve falı, is the practice of interpreting the grounds left in the cup after the coffee is drunk. It travelled with the coffee itself across Turkey, the Balkans, Greece and the Middle East, and each family kept its own way of reading the same shapes. It is a shared ritual at the end of a coffee, not a claim about the future.
How Turkish coffee cup reading works
Drink the coffee holding the cup in your right hand and leave the grounds with a little moisture. Swirl the cup towards yourself, turn it upside down on the saucer and wait a few minutes. Then read from the rim downwards: the rim speaks about the days ahead, the middle about the coming months, the bottom about what lies further away or deeper inside you. The handle marks you and your home, the side opposite it what comes from outside.
