Coffee Cup Reading From a Photo

Photograph the inside of your cup and the shapes in your own grounds are read one by one: what each symbol is, where it sits and which symbol stands next to it. Nothing is written in advance, so the interpretation follows your photo and not a horoscope.

How the photo reading works

  1. 1

    Finish the coffee

Drink down to the grounds and leave a little moisture at the bottom. Grounds that dry out completely no longer form shapes.

  2. 2

    Turn the cup over

Swirl it gently towards yourself, turn it upside down on the saucer and let it cool for a few minutes.

  3. 3

    Photograph your cup

Shoot the inside from above in daylight, without flash. Add the saucer if grounds ran onto it.

  4. 4

    See the symbols

Each shape is picked out in turn: the symbol, its position in the cup and the symbols beside it.

  5. 5

    Read your interpretation

The symbols are read together, in your own language, and the reading is saved in your private history.

How to take a good coffee cup photo

A cup that is white or pale inside reads best, because the grounds stand out clearly against a light surface. Shoot near a window, hold the phone above the cup and keep your own shadow out of it. Do not touch or tidy the grounds with a finger: the shape they settled into is the shape that gets read.

What a photo reading can and cannot do

Whatever is visible in the picture is what gets interpreted: the shape, where it sits between rim and bottom, and the symbols around it. What the grounds did not leave cannot be invented. Coffee cup reading is a tradition, so treat the interpretation as something to think about rather than a statement about what will happen.

What can be found in coffee grounds

Hearts and rings are read as love and commitment, birds as news, a road as a decision, a fish as abundance, an eye as attention and a snake as caution. Every shape we read is listed with its traditional meaning on the coffee cup symbols hub, so you can look one up before or after your own reading.

Questions about photo readings

Can I get a coffee cup reading from a photo?

Yes. The interpretation is written from the grounds in your picture: the shapes are identified, their position in the cup is taken into account, and then they are read together. All that matters is that the inside of the cup is clearly visible.

How many photos should I upload?

One good photo of the inside of the cup is enough. Add the saucer if grounds ran onto it, since tradition reads what settles there separately.

Is the coffee cup reading free?

Your first few readings are free once you create an account. If it becomes a habit you can top up, and the symbol meanings on these pages are always free to read.

Does anyone else see my cup?

No. Your photo and its interpretation stay in your private history. You can share a reading on purpose, and withdraw it again at any time.
